I am looking at developing my basement and would like to know what options I have in flooring? PDF Print E-mail

There are many different options for flooring in basement developments and it usually comes down to personal taste, overall feel, and budget.

The main type of flooring that comes to peoples mind is Carpet. Carpet is probably the most comfortable flooring as well as the most common. The pros are that carpet (Especially Berber) is relatively durable, warm to the feet, and cost effective. The cons are that it can wear or stain if the area is being used as a play room (Think grape pop).

Another option is laminate or engineered flooring. These are both very durable and easy to install. These are your only wood options as traditional hardwood cannot be installed in a basement. They both tend to be slightly cooler to the feet as they are installed over concrete, but a good quality underlay will reduce this effect.

Some of our clients have chosen to use ceramic tile throughout. This is a relatively expensive option, but the overall look and durability are excellent. This option tends to be cooler than the rest, as the ceramic tile will conduct the cooler temperature directly from the concrete unless a ‘thermal break' (cork, heat pad) is used.

The final type of flooring is cork. This is a very warm, comfortable, and durable type of flooring, but It can be a little pricey.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to how the space is going to be used so speak to a flooring professional to ensure proper selection and installation.
